How to Care for Expensive Furniture When Moving

Resultado de imagen de packing expensive furnitureMoving to a new home poses some serious challenges. There’s plenty of things to worry about, and one of the most pressing matters is moving expensive furniture. Whether you own antique furniture or more modern but equally as valuable pieces of furniture, you’ll want to do your best to keep them safe. We understand how important the safety of your belongings is, which is why we’ve put together this comprehensive list of things to do to ensure no luxury item gets damaged during a move.

1. Purchase Quality Packing Supplies

Back in the day when there weren’t that many options available in terms of packing supplies, most people used only cardboard boxes and moving blankets to protect their furniture. Today, however, we’re lucky enough to choose from many different options depending on our needs.

So do add bubble wrap to your shopping list. It’s going to be your best friend during the packing stage of the move. Plastic stretch wrap is also useful, as well as sofa and mattress covers. You may also use corrugated cardboard sheets in addition to other wrapping materials.

2. Clean the Furniture

Before you start packing your pieces of furniture, you first need to give them a thorough clean. Any dirt and dust left uncleaned can scratch your items. Plus, you’d have to clean your furniture at your new home anyway, so you won’t be wasting time by doing it beforehand.

3. Dismantle the Furniture

Another thing you need to do before you start packing is to remove loose parts such as drawers, bed frames, cushions, and other accessories and store them in separate boxes. This way, they won’t fall as the furniture is moved, and it’s also going to be much easier to transport your larger items. Large furniture is heavy, so if you can find ways to make it lighter, you’ll make it easier for the professional movers to drive your furniture to its new home safely.

4. Wrap Your Furniture the Right Way

Always use bubble wrap to protect wood pieces. Corrugated cardboard sheets also work great for wooden pieces of furniture. They add extra protection and help prevent gouges during transportation. Use specially designed plastic sofa covers for your luxury sofas and chairs.

As for glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is yet again the perfect solution. Pay special attention to the corners of the glass or mirror when packing and tape a big ’X’’ over these surfaces so that if they break, they won’t shatter that much.

If you really want to go all the way to protect your expensive furniture from any damage, you’ll also want to invest in a custom crate as a final protective layer. They offer a hard outer protection and are made to measure, so your furniture will stay in place during handling and during the drive to the new location.

5. Insure Your Luxury Items

Most moving companies offer insurance for most of the items, so you’ll need to ask about their specific insurance requirements. For antiques and other valuable items, they may be able to make special insurance arrangements. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your moving company.

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful, not even when you have to care for expensive items. By learning what products to use for wrapping and how to wrap the pieces of furniture in the most effective way, you should be able to prevent any damage and bring your items to their new home safely.
